Analytical Method | Mercurimetric Titration: In a slightly acidic solution, chloride ions (Cl-) firmly bond with mercuric ions (Hg2+) to form undissociated mercuric chloride (HgCl2). During the titration of a chloride solution with mercuric ions, Hg2+ ions are "consumed" while an excess of chloride is present. The titration endpoint is indicated by a colour change from yellow to purple, since free Hg2+ ions have become available which then form a purple complex with diphenylcarbazone. |
Number of Tests | 50 – 80 |
Interferences | Strongly alkaline samples have to neutralised. Bromide and iodide will be titrated as chloride. Chromate, ferric and sulphite ions interfere when present in excess of 10 mg/L. |
Measuring Range | The recommended measuring range is 20 to 200 mg/L (2 – 20 drops @ 10 mg/L) for 5 mL of sample volume. This range can be extended by taking a smaller or larger water sample. For a 2.5 mL sample the measuring range is 40 to 400 mg/L and for a 10 mL sample the range is 10 to 100 mg/L. |
Shelf Life | 2 years |
Applications | Determination and monitoring of chloride levels in industrial water treatment, drinking water, in creeks and rivers (environmental monitoring). |
